Iskander De Bruycker is an Associate Professor at Maastricht University and a leading scholar in the field of EU lobbying and public affairs. His research examines the relationship between citizens, lobby groups, and policymakers, exploring how lobbying either amplifies or undermines citizens’ voices in EU policymaking. Practice Areas

Teaching and management

I am the Program Director of the MA in European Public Affairs. My teaching focuses on EU policy, lobbying, and research methods. I am a strong advocate of the problem-based learning approach we use at Maastricht University. In collaboration with public affairs professionals, I work to prepare students for the job market.

Research

I am deeply interested in the reciprocal relationships between citizens, lobby groups, and policy elites. My PhD research focused on the strategies and influence of lobbyists in shaping EU public policy. Currently, I lead the ACCESS4ALL project, which examines how sociodemographic characteristics of lobbyists—such as gender, education, and national background—impact their access to EU policymakers.

Advice & Mentoring

I offer advice and mentorship to students in political science and related disciplines, providing guidance both academically and professionally. I supervise MA theses and mentor students in the MA European Public Affairs. I maintain connections with our alumni, supporting their professional growth and following their career progress with keen interest.

Outreach

I popularize my research through social media, blogs, and media outreach, aiming to share my passion and exchange ideas on EU public affairs, lobbying strategies, influence, and the role of sociodemographic biases and privilege for lobbying success.
