Iskander
Iskander De Bruycker is Associate Professor of EU Policy and Politics and Research Director of Europe: Society, Politics and Global Order (ESPO) at Maastricht University. His research explores whose voices are heard in EU policymaking and how lobbying shapes political influence and representation. He leads the NWO-funded ACCESS4ALL project, examining how lobbyists’ backgrounds and personal characteristics shape their access to policymakers. His broader research addresses inequalities in political influence, lobbying strategies, and the relationship between organised interests and citizens. Alongside his research and teaching, he regularly shares insights with public affairs professionals, civil society organisations, and policymakers.
Practice Areas
Research
My research examines lobbying, political influence, and democratic representation in the European Union. I lead the NWO-funded ACCESS4ALL project, which explores how lobbyists’ backgrounds shape their access to policymakers, and study disinformation in lobbying through the Lobby-Lies project. As Research Director of ESPO, I work towards a connected, inclusive, and forward-looking European Studies research community.
Teaching and management
My teaching focuses on EU policy, lobbying, and research methods. From 2023 to 2026, I directed the MA in European Public Affairs. I am a strong advocate of Maastricht University’s problem-based learning approach and work with public affairs professionals to connect academic insights with practice. I am also interested in developing executive education in European public affairs, creating opportunities for professionals to learn from research and exchange experiences.
Advice & Mentoring
I supervise four PhD researchers and MA theses, and mentor students, early-career researchers, and young public affairs professionals. My guidance covers research, academic development, and career choices. I also stay connected with our European Public Affairs alumni, offering advice as they find their way in the profession.
Outreach
I share my research through media interviews, public talks, blogs, and social media, and translate findings into practical insights through workshops and masterclasses. I also organise events that bring researchers, public affairs professionals, and policymakers together to exchange ideas about lobbying, political influence, and democratic representation. These exchanges help connect my research with the experiences and questions of people working in and around EU policymaking.
